For the practical element of my dissertation I aim to create a way finding system for an indoor site with a pre existing brand. I have chosen to use Leeds College of Art as the site, specifically the graphic design department. I have chosen this specific area of the site as well as a site with a pre existing brand in order to keep a realistic work load for the signage development. It will also make production, research and development simpler as I have a lot of access to the entire university as well as it being a building I have known as a first time user and a long term veteran, plus the signage system currently in use is just awful.
With my essay focusing on the branding of an environment and the creation of way finding systems it seems a natural progression from academic writing to practical piece to produce a sign system and to attempt to brand an environment myself. I will be using the existing branding, as well as the spaces and the personality of the site to influence my decisions and aim to create a book/publication displaying the different sign systems in a walk though of the site; as well as my thoughts and decisions with sign material choices, design choices, size choices, sign development and sign placement. Using the knowledge and outlined methods of sign development I have studied and spoken about in my essay I will produce a new system more in keeping with the LCA atmosphere with an easier user experience.
Alongside a sign system displayed through this publication I will also attempt to add some environmental design in the form of graphics and art pieces relating to the look and feel of the signage for each of the three studio spaces. I will also produce one physical sign in order to establish the size, shape and feel of the signs in reality.
