OUGD401: Context of Practice: Module Evaluation

BA (Hons.) GRAPHIC DESIGN
LEVEL
04
 Module Code
OUGD401

 Module Title
CONTEXT OF PRACTICE

END OF MODULE SELF-EVALUATION

NAME
Rosalyn Halford

1.  What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?

I have developed an ability to understand semiotics and apply them in the context of an analysis. I have developed the ability to write academically, to reference properly and to form a critical opinion on design and the world around me. I have also developed the ability to think critically and to form my arguments in an academic format.

2. What approaches to/methods of design production have you developed and how have they informed your design development process?

Being able to take academic and purely theoretical written work into a physical product, outcome and form.

3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?

My ability to develop a critical opinion and defend it is something I consider one of my greatest strengths- I can use this to assist in the forming of ideas and explaining my reasoning in written and academic work as well as rationales, evaluations and critical feedback.

I have a very confident writing style that will also prove beneficial in future academic pieces including future essays and my dissertation.

4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these in the future?

Time keeping and keeping consistent. I was appalling when it came to producing my essay for the initial deadline and I feel my work will suffer due to a lack of feedback, despite my efforts to make it as professional as possible. I’m also very easily distracted and this is a very large weakness when it comes to reading books and attempting to gather sources of information as well as keeping to deadlines. When I miss a deadline instead of just getting on with what needs to be done I push the task into the back of my mind in hopes that it will just ‘disappear’. This is stupid, I know, and something I’ve already worked on and need to work on for future work otherwise I won’t pass the course.

5. Identify five things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?
1- Hand in on time- I can get the feedback essential for the development of my work and for getting a better grade at the end of the module.
2- Read more- This will always be beneficial in expanding my knowledge, in forming new ideas and opinions and in trying to focus my attention.
3- Focus and don’t get distracted- Being able to finish work on time will always be essential and mean I can develop further instead of remaining constant.
4- Just ask- I was concerned about getting feedback and speaking to Richard about the lateness of my essay, I can see now this is stupid and I just needed to swallow my pride and do it. If a situation similar to this ever occurs again (which it won’t) I’ll just do the right thing as soon as possible.
5- Attend all sessions- There are a few sessions I missed of COP and I feel I suffered because of this, I wasn’t able to receive all the necessary information relevant to my tasks and work and so I think this will definitely cause my final grade to drop.

6.How would you grade yourself on the following areas:
(please indicate using an ‘x’)

5= excellent, 4 = very good, 3 = good, 2 = average, 1 = poor

The evaluation of your work is an important part of the assessment criteria and represents a percentage of the overall grade. It is essential that you give yourself enough time to complete your written evaluation fully and with appropriate depth and level of self-reflection. If you have any questions relating to the self evaluation process speak to a member of staff as soon as possible.
